The Network Is the Bottleneck

The GPUs get the headlines. But a training cluster is tens of thousands of accelerators trying to act like one computer, and the thing that decides whether they do is the network between them. A cluster that stalls waiting on the fabric is a very expensive way to convert electricity into idle time, which is why the people who build these things have gotten religious about switching.

Arista Networks sells that switching. It came up supplying the big cloud operators when Cisco still owned everything, won by shipping merchant-silicon boxes with better software, and is now one of the main beneficiaries of the argument — largely settled, at this point — that AI back-end networks would land on Ethernet rather than InfiniBand.

Fundamentals

Revenue grew 38% year over year in the latest reported quarter, and net margins run around 38% — a hardware company with software economics. The concentration that comes with cloud customers is the flip side: a handful of buyers make up much of the book, and their capex plans effectively are the revenue line.

None of it comes cheap. About 63 times trailing earnings and 39 times forward, on a $250bn market cap. The multiple assumes the buildout keeps its schedule; a single soft capex guide from a major customer would test that assumption in a hurry.

Technicals

The shares set their 52-week high of $210.50 on Wednesday and have drifted back to about $199 since; the low of the past year is $116. A stock this close to its high is momentum by definition — the trend is doing a lot of work, and anyone entering here is paying up for it rather than buying a dip.
